Eruv Expert Dov Coodin Spoke to the Students
Continuing our series of speakers addressing practical Halachos in day-to-day life, Mr. Dov Coodin, Ottawa’s resident Eruv expert, spoke to the students about the Halachos of the construction and maintenance of an Eruv. Drawing on his experiences as the person in charge of maintaining and inspecting the Ottawa Westboro and Toronto eruvim, he spoke about the necessary Halachic aspects of an eruv, the tools needed to inspect one, and the controversies that can involve Eruvim. The students learned that even their construction is more complicated than it sounds. Permission is needed from every residents in order to proceed, so one must ask the Mayor in his or her capacity as the representative of the citizens of the area. Within the Westboro eruv there are several embassies on foreign soil, so they instead had to ask the Chief of Police. They asked him, “If an execution were occurring at the embassy of El Salvador, would you intervene?” He responded in the affirmative, so they concluded that he had the necessary authority. Mr. Coodin also spoke about the importance of financial support for eruvim, referring to their very expensive upkeep and contruction, ranging in the thousands of dollars. The students came away far more informed about the things that allow them to carry on Shabbos, and far more grateful for the work done to give them this.
